Shadows

The Shadow of the Almighty

What is a shadow?

  • a dark image or shape cast on a surface by the interception of light rays

  • an area of relative darkness

  • a hint, image, or faint semblance:

  • a threatening influence

  • to screen or protect from light, heat, etc.;

  • to follow (a person) about secretly, in order to keep watch over his movements.

In the Bible the mentioning of shadow often refers or indicates God’s protection over His children. In studying the scripture about the “shadow of death” in Psalms 23 I came to understand through divine inspiration that death has no power over Christians because it cannot touch us. As we walk through the valley where death exists all we see is its shadow because God’s light is shining upon death. Light on any object casts it shadow but the shadow is only a dark outline of no substance. The scripture does not say we walk through the valley of death but only its shadow. The shadow has no effect because God is present.

Psalms 23:4 - Yea, though I walk through the valley of the shadow of death, I will fear no evil: for thou art with me; thy rod and thy staff they comfort me.

As Christians live under the watchful eye of the Lord there is refuge and protection. God’s promise is that he will never leave or forsake you.

Psalms 91:1 - He that dwelleth in the secret place of the most High shall abide under the shadow of the Almighty.

Psalms 57:1 - Be merciful unto me, O God, be merciful unto me: for my soul trusteth in thee: yea, in the shadow of thy wings will I make my refuge.

Psalms 17:8 - Keep me as the apple of the eye; hide me under the shadow of thy wing.

Psalms 121:3 - He will not suffer thy foot to be moved: he that keepeth thee will not slumber.

Remember the old saying: “behind every dark cloud is a silver lining.” Well I tell you as a Christian if you trust and abide in Him: “behind every cloud there is God.” As the clouds come remember they create a shadow upon you and your circumstance but it is God’s light behind the clouds that cast the shadow. A shadow cannot exist without light and Jesus is the light of the world.

Mark 9:7 - And there was a cloud that overshadowed them: and a voice came out of the cloud, saying, This is my beloved Son.

Prayer Ministry

The one thing that holds this ministry and our work together is our prayer ministry headed up by Deidre Schilling and the prayer team known as the Twelve Disciples.  Did you know that our prayer register has over 300 requests to date?  Each of the names is called out to the Lord everyday not just on Wednesday.  It is a humbling thing to call out 300 names to the Lord knowing that you need as much prayer as any of these names.  Many people will be touched by the Lord through Hands Up Ministry who otherwise might never attend church.

Hands Up Christmas 2013

Since 2000 the first year of ministry HUM has adopted at least one family to provide for their Christmas needs.  Each year that commitment has grown one additional family with the ministry.  As we are completing our fourteenth year of ministry we hope to adopt fourteen families through working with Richmond Redevelopment & Housing Authority.  In total with these fourteen families we will have provided a Christmas celebration for 28 families through Weed & Seed plus an additional 6 families through Chesterfield Christmas Mother and 4 at large families and 81 families through RR&HA.  To date 105 families have been blessed by God through Hands Up Ministry and that total will grow to 119 in 2013 with God's help.

Give your best for Jesus on His birthday in 2013!

I hope each of you will consider helping the efforts of HUM to minister to these needy families.  The children we touch today will be our leaders tomorrow.

"Put Christ first and you will never be last"

I know it is becoming more and more difficult for us to provide Christmas for the families that we try to minister to but we are the light of the world to these families and Jesus wants us to be His ambassadors .
